  • Ranjani Viswanatha

摘要

This article explores the transformative impact of nanotechnology on materials science, focusing on the dimensionality of materials and its profound influence on properties. Tracing the origins of nanotechnology to Richard Feynman’s 1959 Caltech talk, the narrative progresses through decades of research, culminating in the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus, and Alexei Ekimov for their pioneering work on quantum dots1. The article delves into the history and synthesis of quantum dots, elucidating their size-dependent properties and the groundbreaking contributions of the Nobel laureates to the field. The article discusses the conceptual understanding of quantum dot size dependence, emphasizing the role of quantum confinement and the evolution of quantum dot research since then. The last section discusses applications in the fields of light-emitting diodes, photovoltaics, photodetectors, bioimaging and catalysis. Finally, a few open questions, along with future challenges, including integrating electron spin for spintronic devices and addressing the surface-to-volume ratio, are posed. The article concludes by highlighting the immense potential of quantum dots in reshaping various industries through atomically precise engineering and quantum physics.
