Therapeutic Potential of Phenolic Phytochemicals in Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder caused by genetic and environmental factors (dietary and lifestyle). The use of modern drugs as antidiabetic therapy causes several adverse effects. Hence, there is a need to explore alternative and traditional medicinal practices in the management of DM with minimal and negligible side effects. Therefore, traditional and complementary medicine has received increasing attention as a therapeutic modality in DM and its complications. This article explores the antidiabetic potential of some phenolic phytochemicals obtained from various traditional medicinal plants.
