Angular Momentum of the Photon: Its Discovery and Heuristic Derivation

In this article, we will briefly discuss the history of who discovered the intrinsic angular momentum of the photon and present a heuristic derivation of the fact that the photon has spin one. Then, we present, using forward Raman scattering, the experimental proof of Raman and Bhagavantam that the photon indeed has spin one. This analysis should be of interest to many teachers as the arguments are elementary.
