High-resolution analysis of tropical cyclone vortex structure using EOS-04 SAR: A case study of TC Biparjoy over NIO

Indian Space Research Organisation launched EOS-04 satellite carrying C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload on 14th February 2022. Possibilities of imaging Tropical Cyclone (TC) occurring in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea is high by EOS-04 due to its systematic coverage over North Indian Ocean (NIO). This opportunity offers utilisation of EOS-04 SAR data in resolving complex structure of TC at high spatial and temporal resolutions in more efficient manner. But prior utilising, it is a prerequisite to examine data thoroughly. The present study is formalised with this objective and demonstrates the potential of EOS-04 SAR data in resolving TC vortex structure by considering a test case of Biparjoy cyclone occurred in the Arabian Sea during 8-10 June 2023. Results reveal the promising performance of EOS-04 SAR in precise estimation of TC spatial and structure parameters such as eye, eyewall and vortex. The outcomes of the study are useful in understanding TC dynamics in data-sparse regions and support operational TC monitoring.
