UTAUT-for-Industry: A novel model for assessing employee’s acceptance of new technologies in the industrial context

As industries transition towards greater automation and digitization, the successful adoption of new technology by shop floor workers becomes pivotal for enhancing productivity and efficiency. However, the acceptance of technology among workers often faces resistance due to various factors, including fear of job displacement, unfamiliarity with technology, and perceived complexity. This research study proposes a novel methodology aimed at increasing the acceptance of new technology among shop floor workers to facilitate their daily activities. The methodology integrates principles from UTAUT (Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology) to create an inclusive and supportive environment for technology adoption. Key components of the methodology include the perception of use, social factors, technology complexity, implementation process and security perception. Information regarding each aspect will be collected by surveys, implemented in two companies which will employ three innovative technologies: a collaborative robot, a digital warehouse for the assembly of screw kits, and a new machine in a ceramic industry’s production process that detects and categorizes plate defects using artificial vision and machine learning algorithms. These use cases will highlight the advantages of the methodology, paving a way to enhance the acceptance, by the workers, of the introduction of these new technologies on the shop floor. By employing this methodological approach, organizations can effectively overcome barriers to technology acceptance and empower shop floor workers to embrace and leverage new technologies to optimize their work processes.
