Impact of texture cutting tools on sustainable machining methods: a review

Sustainable turning involves gradually removing material from the outer periphery of a workpiece. An eco-friendly machining/turning technique is characterized as a method that minimizes environmental impact, ensures operator safety, conserves energy, and is cost-effective. This article reviews the work on the impact of surface-textured tools on turning performance in different machining environments and explores sustainable processes for creating textured tools. Surface texturing, a contemporary green manufacturing practice, modifies the cutting tool’s structure at the rake face to enhance tribological performance. The review covers various geometrical shapes of textures, such as circular, oval, grooves, and dimples, applied to the tool rake face. Cutting forces play a crucial role in lubrication and cooling during turning processes. Under micro-pool lubrication, textured tools reduced cutting forces by 11–13% compared to dry turning. The study concluded that dimple textured tool patterns decreased tool wear rates due to superior mechanical interlocking, outperforming other textured tool patterns. Turning with textured tools developed lower friction, reduced temperatures at the turning zone, minimized area of chip on tool, decreased tool wear, and improved the work material’s surface finish.
