Chronic Constipation in Persons with Cystic Fibrosis: Management and Treatment Options
摘要
Cystic fibrosis is a multiorgan disease with significant gastrointestinal comorbidities. Chronic constipation, including symptoms of bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, and early satiety are common in persons with cystic fibrosis. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the management and treatment of chronic constipation in adults with cystic fibrosis.
Recent FindingsClinical studies of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic agents for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (constipation predominant) exist for the general population but are lacking for persons with cystic fibrosis.
SummaryThe mechanistic action and supporting evidence and use of off-label medications to treat gastrointestinal symptoms in persons with cystic fibrosis are discussed, along with medications currently under development.
