Purpose of Review

A recent wave of neurodiverse self-advocacy has led to increased awareness of these individuals throughout society. However, neurodiverse women are still an underrepresented population in comparison to their male counterparts. This is especially true regarding the topic of sexuality. The goal of this review was to examine sexuality-focused research on neurodiverse women conducted within the last five years.

Recent Findings

The awareness and care of neurodiverse women’s sexual health in research and practice is still critically influenced by the dominant discourse in society. They have significant experiences with sexual victimization and exploitation and there exists a distinct link between gender, neurodiversity, and sexual health diagnoses that needs further exploration.

Summary

Continued focus within both research and practice is needed to explore sexual health experiences of neurodiverse women. Improving communication and building skills in working with both sexual health and neurodiversity among providers is crucial for better supporting neurodiverse women, especially when addressing their unique sexual health challenges. Additionally, there is a need to raise awareness and increase research on these issues to improve care for this population.
