Native American Adolescent and Young Adult Sexual Health Inequities: A Short Review

We systematically reviewed research to identify sexual health inequities among Native American adolescents and young adults. We highlight strengths and opportunities in the literature and outline principles for addressing sexual health inequities among Native American adolescents and young adults.

We identified fourteen articles that assess and/or provide recommendations to improve sexual health inequities among Native American adolescents and young adults.

Overall, the most addressed topic among the articles analyzed is condom use, including condom use intention and condom use self-efficacy. This speaks to the need to provide Native American adolescents and young adults with the necessary tools to boost their intentions, self-efficacy, and knowledge when it comes to condom use skills. Findings may guide researchers, educators, and curriculum developers to better the sexual health and well-being of vulnerable youth.
