The Subjective Experience of Individuals with Pedohebephilic Interest

Pedohebephiles are a disparate population that experiences sexual interest in children. This review article summarizes recent quantitative and qualitive research how pedohebephilic interests are distributed in the population, developmental pathways to pedohebephilia, features of sexual interest and behavior in male and female pedohebephiles, correlates of pedohebephilic interests, correlates of offending behavior by pedohebephiles, stigma-related stressors, and treatment preferences of this population.

Pedohebephilia tends to be distributed categorically in the population, with preferentiality of interest being a key distinguishing feature with these interests. As we see in the general population, well-established risk factors for sexual offending against children tend to be higher in pedohebephiles who commit such offences. There is a growing scientific literature finding similarities between female and male pedohebephiles, with notable differences between the sexes. One area of prime interest has been the developmental characteristics of individuals with pedohebephilia. These studies tend to find both elevated childhood adversity and markers of neurodevelopmental perturbations in this population, raising interesting questions regarding developmental trajectories for these sexual interests. Mental health concerns and experiences with stigma are especially prevalent in this population.

The current review finds an expanding scientific literature investigating a range of issues as they related to individuals with pedohebephilic interest. Recommendations are offered to continue to advance our understanding pedohebephilic individuals’ experiences.
