Implementation of New Guidelines and Vaccines for the Prevention of Acute and Chronic HBV Infection
摘要
Chronic hepatitis B is a global health concern which contributes to 820,000 deaths annually. Following World Health Organisation’s 2030 goal to eliminate viral hepatitis, recent initiatives aim to reduce (i) hepatitis-related deaths, and (ii) incidence of new chronic hepatitis infection.
Recent FindingsIn 2022, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) streamlined HBV vaccination coverage for all adults, shifting from previous policies of only recommending HBV vaccination in ‘high-risk’ groups. The move was targeted to reduce HBV-related mortality and morbidity, especially from acute HBV infections. New generation HBV vaccines such as (Heplisav-B® and PreHevbrio®) demonstrated non-inferiority in healthy adults and superior immunogenicity in traditional vaccine-poor responders when compared to traditional recombinant HBV vaccines, with equivalent safety profiles.
SummaryThe new CDC policy changes together with utilisation of newer HBV vaccines promise to reduce acute and chronic HBV and its sequelae if implemented well.
