The Impact of Prior Military Experience and Burnout on Police Officer Use of Force
摘要
Despite many police officers reporting prior military service, there is little research about police officers who are veterans. This study examined whether military experience was related to use of force and burnout in a sample of 418 police officers. The relation between burnout and use of force was also investigated. Approximately 28% of participants reported prior military experience. No significant differences in use of force were found between officers with prior military experience and those without, however, officers currently serving in the national guard/reserve reported more overall instances of use of force. Regarding burnout, military veterans reported less emotional exhaustion. Higher rates of depersonalization and personal accomplishment were associated with greater use of force over the past year, and police officers with more years of policing experience reported fewer instances of use of force. Results of this study suggest a need for interventions to reduce police officer burnout. Implications for methodological issues in the measurement of use of force are also discussed.
