Adaptation and Validation of the PHQ-9 Scale in Bangla for Bangladesh Police Personnel
摘要
While the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) is commonly used in Bangladesh to diagnose depression, no evidence of its psychometric properties has been found in police personnel. The current study aimed to adapt and assess the Bangla psychometric properties of the PHQ-9 scale among Bangladeshi police personnel. A total of 400 police personnel from Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) were recruited as a sample using multistage random sampling. We investigated psychometric properties using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). We investigate the convergent validity by using the PHQ-9 scale with the General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale. Of 400 participants 78% were male (Mage ± SD = 39.17 ± 7.55) and 22% were female (Mage ± SD = 40.61 ± 7.57). Cronbach's alpha (α = 0.898) and McDonald's omega (ω = 0.897) both demonstrated high reliability for the PHQ-9. Test–retest result showed that the average PHQ-9 scores across participants were very stable over time. The EFA revealed a single-factor structure, with an eigenvalue of 5.006, explaining 55.63% of the variance, when Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) supports this finding. Fit indices suggested a moderate to good fit [χ2/df = 3.486, CFI = 0.978, GFI = 0.991, TLI = 0.968, RMSEA = 0.112, and SRMR = 0.062]. We found convergent validity for PHQ-9 with GAD-7 (r = 0.68, p < 0.01), and further construct validity was evident for the PHQ-9 scale in two groups with and without GAD (t = 10.89, p < 0.01). The Bangla version of the PHQ-9 scale was found to be a reliable and valid unidimensional scale for measuring depression in Bangladesh Police.
