Exploring the elasmobranch diversity, distribution, and conservation status: a comparative study of India’s west and east coast with insights into commercial cathches

Chondrichthyans belonging to 73 different species and two subclasses (elasmobranchii and holocephali) were identified during 100 days of field visits from fishery-dependent observations conducted across 16 harbors (8 from each coast) and eight coastal states in India. An equivalent effort in terms of days was invested (n = 50 days) on each coast, totalling 100 days. We identified eight orders, 23 families, and 40 genera within subclass elasmobranchii and only one species from holocephali. 32 species were observed within the super-order selachimorpha and 40 within the batoidea. Batoid species belonging to the genera glaucostegus, rhinobatos, rhinoptera, and pateobatis preferred near-shore estuarine habitats, while sharks like carcharhinus sp. and mobulid sp. preferred deeper shore waters. A high percentage of juvenile elasmobranchs were observed from West Bengal and Orissa on the east coast, highlighting indiscriminate fishing practices. The west coast of India (57 species, H-index = 2.562, Evenness = 0.625) is more diverse than the east (47 species, H-index = 1.817, Evenness = 0.472). There is a substantial difference between the coasts determined from the Chi-Square (9206.95) test, while the Bray–Curtis (0.624367521) value quantifies the difference between both coasts. The current IUCN status reveals that 12% of species are critically endangered (Ce), 24% are endangered (Ed), 34% are vulnerable (Vu), 15% are near threatened (Nt), 7% are least concern (Lc), 3% not evaluated (Ne), and 1% data deficient (Dd). The absence of many species with severely plummeting numbers in others highlights the requirement of renewed and urgent conservation efforts to prevent local extinctions.
