Evaluating coastal vulnerability: mapping inundation risk in Tamil Nadu with and without coastal protection

Coastal regions worldwide face increasing risks of inundation due to erosion and extreme weather events. Tamil Nadu, a densely populated coastal state in India, is particularly vulnerable to these hazards. This research paper employs a geospatial approach to assess and map the coastal inundation risk for the Tamil Nadu coast. The study integrates remote sensing data and topographic data with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques to classify vulnerable areas along the coastline. The geospatial analysis considers factors such as elevation, distance from the shoreline, and green (natural) and gray (man-made) infrastructure to quantify the extent of coastal inundation risk. The results from this assessment provide a valuable understanding of the distribution of vulnerability along the Tamil Nadu coast and serve as a basis for formulating effective adaptation and mitigation approaches. The study reveals that the northern part of Tamil Nadu has more high-risk areas than the southern part of Tamil Nadu.
