Assessment of plant diversity in the sand dunes of Mounda, Kefalonia: a study of species frequency and coverage

Plant diversity of sand dunes of Mounda beach in Kefalonia Island was studied. Species frequency and coverage was assessed within the main vegetation formations occurring along sand dune environmental gradient, by placing quadrats within transects perpendicular to the coastline. Use of hierarchical clustering analysis revealed three primary vegetation assemblages, namely coastal grasslands, open herbaceous zones, and low shrublands that reflect change of abiotic factors along sand dune habitat gradient. Thirty three species were recorded, belonging to fifteen families of angiosperms, with the families of Poaceae and Asteraceae encompassing the largest number of species. Regarding life-forms, Therophytes and Geophytes (Cryptophytes) were the most prevalent. In terms of phytogeography, 46% of the observed species were specifically associated with or restricted to the Mediterranean region. Cyperus capitatus, Pancratium maritimum, and Elytrigia juncea emerged as the most frequent, with Thymbra capitata covering the largest total quadrat area. Species coincidence and coverage patterns were examined through a clustering analysis. Composition and species richness of vegetation that develops in the sand dunes (embryo dunes, yellow dunes, and fixed dunes) of study area were assessed. The results revealed that the embryo dunes host 19 unique species, while the yellow and fixed dunes 29 unique species each. Pancratium maritimum, Cyperus capitatus, and Thymbra capitata appeared as the most abundant in embryo, yellow, and fixed dunes respectively. Threats to the ecosystem were also observed, during the field surveys. The results highlighted the ecological importance of Mounda’s sand dunes and provided valuable insights that can guide future studies and conservation efforts.
