<p>The study assesses the stock status of the Malabar Snapper (<i>Lutjanus malabaricus</i>) in the Makassar strait using catch-effort data approach, applying the BSM (Bayesian Schaefer model). The Malabar Snapper stock is in an overfished state, as reflected by <i>B/B</i><sub><i>MSY</i></sub> ratio &lt; 1 and the fishing mortality ratio of <i>F/F</i><sub><i>MSY</i></sub> &gt;1. The <i>B/k</i> parameter, which serves as an indicator of stock depletion, suggests a significant stock decline. Given the severity of the stock depletion, using maximum sustainable yield (<i>MSY)</i> as a reference point may not be suitable for managing Malabar Snappers in the Makassar Strait. Although the recent catch (in 2023) falls within the <i>MSY</i> confidence interval, the overall stock conditions remain unsustainable due to continued overfishing. As a result, alternative reference points are proposed to guide management decisions: a limit reference point (LRP) set at B<sub><i>MSY</i></sub> and a target reference point (TRP) established at 1.2 <i>B</i><sub><i>MSY</i></sub>. Additionally, fishing mortality should maintain below <i>F</i><sub><i>MSY</i></sub> with an ideal target of 0.75 <i>F</i><sub><i>MSY</i></sub> to allow for stock recovery. A comprehensive management framework incorporating stock-specific management strategies is recommended to ensure long-term sustainability. These include setting catch quotas, implementing sizes restriction, controlling fishing efforts, and regulating hook types and sizes. By enforcing these measures, fisheries managers can support stock rebuilding and promote the long-term viability of the Malabar Snapper fishery in the Makassar Strait.</p>
