An integrated framework for assessment of coastal vulnerability in the Sunderban delta region

Sea Level Rise (SLR) has emerged as a matter of serious concern in the Sunderban Delta Region in West Bengal, leading to significant land loss, erosion, flooding and saltwater ingress. These have substantial adverse impacts on the ecology of the area and the lives and livelihood of the coastal communities. The economy of the area is largely dependent on natural resource-based activities and hence have high vulnerability to the impact of SLR. The vulnerability is further exacerbated by the social conditions of the coastal communities. It is, therefore, essential to assess the degree of vulnerability of the communities to promote adaptation and mitigation strategies and enhance resilience. Previous empirical studies assessed vulnerability as a function of either sensitivity and exposure to the impact of SLR or adaptive capacity of the coastal communities. This study takes into consideration all the three parameters in the assessment of vulnerability by computing the Composite Coastal Vulnerability Index. The result reveals the degree and variation of vulnerability, which can be utilized to design effective strategies for enhancing resilience, based on the local needs and conditions.
