Estimating the impact of land use/cover changes on ecosystem services value in Moroccan Atlantic and Mediterranean wetlands using google earth engine

Informed environmental decisions and conservation efforts require understanding how Land Use Land Cover (LULC) changes impact ecosystem service values (ESV). This study evaluated ESV provided by coastal habitats through monitoring LULC changes, considering Moroccan coastal lagoons, Merja-Zerga and Marchica, as study areas. Sentinel-2 (10m) images spanning 2015 to 2023 were classified using Google Earth Engine (GEE). ESV for each LULC type (ESVi) and for each function (ESVf) were analysed based on spatiotemporal LULC changes. The main findings include: 1- Marchica lagoon exhibited the highest ESV in 2016, followed by 2020 and 2019, with values of 152.95, 152.76, and 152.52 million USD respectively. Similarly, Merja-Zerga lagoon's peak ESV occurred in 2016, followed by 2022 and 2020, with values of 24.77, 23.01, and 22.02 million USD. 2- Water bodies and flooded vegetation were the main contributors to total ESV in both lagoons, due to their large area and high ESV coefficient. 3- Regulating services played a major role, contributing to 96% (146 million USD) of Marchica's ESV and 91% (20 million USD) of Merja-Zerga's ESV. 4- Marchica's ESV remained stable from 2015 to 2023, with minimal LULC changes. However, Merja-Zerga experienced dynamic shifts in functions like nutrient cycling, climate regulation, and raw material due to decreasing tree cover, influenced by various activities including expansion of sand dunes and agricultural areas, urbanisation, and deforestation after 2020. These findings highlight the significance of ecosystem services in ecological balance, emphasising the importance of their preservation and management for a sustainable future.
