Impact of sea encroachment and tidal floods in coastal communities: case of Idabato subdivision, Bakassi Peninsula, Cameroon

This study sought to: i) identify areas susceptible to sea encroachment and tidal flooding in Idabato subdivision; ii) assess the physical, socio-economic and health impacts of sea encroachment and floods; iii) evaluate the extent of sea encroachment from 1978 to 2015; and iv) identify the local adaptation strategies used. A mixed method approach was used in this study. Field observation and key-informant interviews were the main qualitative methods used in assessing the susceptibility of Idabato to sea infringement and tidal flooding, and assess effectiveness of adaptation measures. The quantitative research method in the form of questionnaires was used to assess impacts, perceptions and community adaptation measures using simple random sampling techniques. Remote sensing and geomorphic parameters were used to assess land cover changes; extent of sea encroachment; and the identification of areas susceptible to sea encroachment and tidal flooding respectively. Field observation show that the coastal geomorphology in the study area is characterized by sandy beaches with very fine unconsolidated sediments. Loss of property (buildings, household items, documents), livelihood, work hours, human lives, land and vegetation; increasing disease prevalence (mainly malaria, typhoid and skin diseases) as well as injuries, were among the physical, socio-economic and health impacts experienced in the communities. Landcover changes between 1978 to 2015 revealed a steady increase in water bodies inland from 9.33 km2 to 14.75 km2 with a net increase of 5.42 km2. The common adaptation measures used by the locals include the construction of elevated houses, use of old fishing nets and sand bags, moving inland and in the worst-case scenario, relocating to Nigeria. Development efforts in Idabato have been undermined as the sea continues to encroach with a lot of the infrastructures in ruins.
