<p>In the social sciences, it is argued that employees use impression management tactics such as self-promotion or ingratiation to create a positive perception of their abilities. By using an agency setting with career concerns, we investigate how team and individual production affect impression management activities. We analyze organizational impacts on the cost of impression management and the information quality of impression management signals, as well as how these factors interact with impression management effort and organizational efficiency. Because team production lowers the visibility of the individual agent, impression management should be more prevalent in team-based organizations than under individual production. However, if output noise is sufficiently high and team production is highly synergistic, impression management is lower under team production. Moreover, while a lower precision of impression management signals always increases the firm’s surplus under individual production, there are opposing effects under team production.</p>
