Assessing Level of Social Satisfaction of Forest and Riverine Ecosystem Dependent Dwellers in Gosaba C.D. Block, Sundarbans
摘要
This study explores the complex connections between socio-economic factors, environmental reliance, and community satisfaction within forest and dependent dwellers in the Gosaba Community Development (C.D.) Block of the Indian Sundarbans. It is located in a region vulnerable to cyclones, saline intrusion, and conflicts with wildlife and the livelihoods of the residents are heavily linked to forest and river based resources. Utilizing data from 120 households across five villages, this research employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating quantitative surveys, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and secondary data analysis. The Satisfaction Index (SI) has been calculated based on varying income groups and it is scrutinized with two-way ANOVA and multivariate linear regression. The results indicate significant variations in satisfaction levels across various satisfactory factors such as healthcare, drinking water, social security, and agricultural productivity (F = 5.123, p = 0.0031); however, income levels do not show any significant effect on overall social satisfaction (F = 1.151, p = 0.3556). It suggests that systemic infrastructural shortcomings, limited access to welfare, and environmental challenges foster a common sense of deprivation among different socio-economic groups. The study highlights the urgent need for enhancements in rural healthcare, educational opportunities, livelihood diversification, and water security, while advocating for the integration of community welfare with conservation efforts. This approach aligned with various Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 1, SDG 3, and SDG 11) and calls for comprehensive, community-oriented development strategies that address the unique socio-ecological difficulties faced by the dwellers of Gosaba C.D. block in Indian Sundarbans.
