The Realization of Humanity: The Concept of ‘Sobornost’ in the Philosophy of Nicolas Berdyaev
摘要
This article explores the concept of Sobornost’, which is a unifying principle that encompasses all of humankind. It is used as a framework to understand the Christian ideal of human realization as a person. The article builds on the work of Russian thinkers from the 19th and 20th centuries and delves into the personalistic and ecclesiological framework of Nikolas Berdyaev. Berdyaev believed that creative expression is crucial for human development and that aligning oneself with Sobornost’, the profound conciliar unity that encompasses all of humanity, is essential for becoming a person. Berdyaev drew inspiration from the Kabbalistic concept of Adam Kadmon, the archetypal human who embodies the totality of creation. By examining these interconnected concepts, the article offers a nuanced understanding of Berdyaev’s philosophy of personhood and how it can be ultimately fulfilled within the Christian faith.
