Bibliometric and Systematic Literature Analysis on Hydrometallurgy for the Recovery of Gold, Silver, and Platinum Group Metals

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of scientific research on hydrometallurgy applied to the recovery of gold, silver, and platinum group metals from 1981 to 2025. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining bibliometric analysis, text mining, and content analysis to fulfill three objectives: identify key themes and trends, conduct a systematic literature review, and propose future research directions. A total of 295 peer-reviewed articles were selected through a structured search strategy and screening process based on established systematic review protocols. The findings revealed three thematic areas: gold recovery using alternative lixiviants such as thiosulfate, deep eutectic solvents, and electrochemical methods; silver recovery from polymetallic ores and electronic waste via selective leaching and advanced separation processes; and platinum group metals recovery, emphasizing ionic liquids, multicomponent separation, and spent catalyst valorization. Based on current research gaps, five priority research directions are proposed: for gold recovery, key areas include regeneration and reuse of alternative lixiviants (thiosulfate) and the application of mild oxidative pretreatments to improve leaching efficiency. Additional directions involve hybrid methods for silver recovery; selective extraction of rhodium, iridium, and osmium; and integration of machine learning for process optimization. These directions underscore the relevance of hydrometallurgy in advancing more sustainable, circular, technology-driven mining.
