Catalytic-Role of Sr on the Evolution of Fe-rich Phases in Recycled Al-Si-Fe Alloys

Iron impurity in Al-Si alloys promotes the formation of plate-like β-Fe-rich intermetallics, while the presence of 0.1wt.% Mo-refined plate-like intermetallic phases occurs without significantly changeing their morphology. The present work deals with the influence of strontium (Sr) on the morphological changes in the Fe-rich phases in the recycled alloys (Mo modified). Solidification kinetics and microstructural analysis using computer-aided cooling curve analysis (CACCA), SEM-EDS, STEM and XRD, respectively, reveal a catalytic role of Sr in promoting the evolution of α-Al8(FeMo)Si phases over β-Al5FeSi-phases. Sr addition shows significant refinement in eutectic-Si and β-Fe phases and promotes the nucleation of Chinese-script α-Fe-rich phases in the recycled alloys.
