摘要

A novel method in semi-solid state and by helping shear force has been tried for fabricating aluminum matrix composites reinforced by fibers through a thixomixing process as its novelty. Basalt fibers (with the volume fraction of 2, 4, and 6%) were dispersed into molten AA356 by creating shear mixing in the range of the semi-solid temperature of aluminum. Shear punch tests and Brinell hardness were utilized to study the mechanical behavior of the produced composite samples. Also, elemental analysis and microstructural investigations were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results illustrated that the shear strength and hardness were simultaneously improved versus higher values of fibers, which resulted in the improvement of the ultimate strength of the composite samples. The shear strength improved to 132.3 MPa (for the sample with 6 vol.% of basalt fibers) from 119.1 MPa (for the sample without fibers), registering an 11% improvement. Also, the hardness value increased to 70.80 HB from 62.3 HB, registering a 13.6% improvement. Moreover, the ultimate tensile strength of this sample was enhanced with the value of 10.9%. According to the microstructural results, the mechanical properties have been improved due to the formation of intermetallic compounds along the interface.
