Dream recall during the day triggered by daytime events: frequency and influencing factors
摘要
Typically, dream recall is measured directly upon awakening by structured interviews in the laboratory setting or by dream diaries in the home setting. However, anecdotal evidence and small pilot studies have shown that recall of some dreams that are not remembered upon awakening might be triggered by cues that are related to the content of the dream. In a sample of 444 participants, the retrospective estimates indicate that the phenomenon of recalling dreams that were not recalled upon awakening when triggered by a cue during the day is reasonably common, accounting for about 15% of all recalled dreams. Interestingly, boundary thinness but not memory skills were related to this frequency. The study also provided hints that measuring dream recall frequency using dream diaries completed in the morning might be impacted by this phenomenon. It seems fruitful to study this phenomenon in more detail to better understand the processes involved in dream recall.
