<p>The new Act on Professions in Medical Technology (<i>Gesetz über die Berufe in der medizinischen Technologie, MTBG</i>) came into force on 1&#xa0;January 2023. It was intended to define and reorganise the job profile of medical technical assistants (MTA) in a new and more precise form. Not only did the job title change, but also the training and examination regulations along with the areas of expertise of those working in this field, which can be found in the catalogue of competences in the Training and Examination Regulations for Medical Technologists (<i>Ausbildungs- und Prüfungsverordnung für Medizinische Technologinnen und Medizinische Technologen, MTAPrV</i>). The activities of MTF encompass functional diagnostic examinations in various specialist areas, including plausibility checks and quality assurance as well as carrying out preliminary findings for the respective examinations. Unfortunately, sleep medicine is not mentioned here, although this also lies within the area of expertise of the MTF. This article examines changes and innovations to the MTBG, many of which bring (long overdue) improvements and some of which will require further adaptation in the future.</p>
