Climate and sleep

Climate change affects life on Earth across multiple dimensions, including evolutionary adaptation; mental health; sleep regulation; and behavioral responses in humans, animals, and plants. Historical adaptations show how species have evolved traits to survive extreme climates; however, the unprecedented pace of current anthropogenic change challenges the capacity of natural systems. Human adaptation relies heavily on technological and social interventions, while animals and plants face migration barriers and physiological limitations. Concurrently, climate change is linked to mental health impacts, including post-traumatic stress, depression, and climate anxiety, with vulnerable populations being disproportionately affected. Sleep is increasingly disturbed by rising nighttime temperatures, particularly among older adults and socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. In animals, climate-induced changes in sleep patterns include reduced duration, increased nocturnality, and disrupted hibernation. Innovative solutions to mitigate heat-induced sleep disruption—such as smart thermoregulation systems, cooling mattresses, and breathable materials—are promising but require broader accessibility. Sleep and mental health challenges are exacerbated by urban heat islands and pollution, which further complicates adaptive responses. Scientific research emphasizes the urgent need for systemic public health, ecological, and technological strategies to enhance resilience and protect wellbeing in an increasingly warming world.
