Introduction <p>Climate change could lead to changes in sleep and sleep patterns as well as in sleep disorders and chronobiological changes, beginning with poor quality of sleep, reinforced by a&#xa0;shift of the sleep–wake rhythm, leading to severe sleep disorders. Their prevalence and incidence were unknown until now. Both sleep disorders and chronobiological changes have a&#xa0;wide variety of causes and usually present as a&#xa0;comorbid disorder in various somatic and psychiatric diagnoses, mental disorders, and treatments. There can be many different predictors of sleep disorders and chronobiological changes, such as predisposition or pre-existing diseases, caused and/or reinforced by climate change.</p> Methods <p>A&#xa0;systematic literature review related to <i>Climate change</i> and <i>Sleep</i> was carried out and 1649 studies were evaluated. The articles were identified through PubMed, PsycInfo, and Web of Knowledge; a&#xa0;total of 30&#xa0;publications were included in the analysis.</p> Results <p>A&#xa0;total of 95&#xa0;studies on the topics of climate change and sleep were identified; 30&#xa0;of them were analysed, based on various criteria (climatic and civilisation-related changes, natural disasters and special weather phenomena).</p> Conclusion <p>Changes in sleep, in sleep patterns and in sleep quality as well as different sleep disorders (such as insomnias, hypersomnias, parasomnias) and chronobiological changes can be predicted for very different reasons. Personalised treatment of climate-related change are needed to improve the mental and/or physical situations of these patients.</p>

Introduction

There can be many different predictors of sleep disorders and chronobiological changes, such as predisposition or pre-existing diseases, caused and/or reinforced by climate change.

Methods

A systematic literature review related to Climate change and Sleep was carried out and 1649 studies were evaluated. The articles were identified through PubMed, PsycInfo, and Web of Knowledge; a total of 30 publications were included in the analysis.

Results

A total of 95 studies on the topics of climate change and sleep were identified; 30 of them were analysed, based on various criteria (climatic and civilisation-related changes, natural disasters and special weather phenomena).

Conclusion

Changes in sleep, in sleep patterns and in sleep quality as well as different sleep disorders (such as insomnias, hypersomnias, parasomnias) and chronobiological changes can be predicted for very different reasons. Personalised treatment of climate-related change are needed to improve the mental and/or physical situations of these patients.
