摘要

Persons who have experienced sexual assault often suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and are entitled to treatment that provides more than stabilization. However, the question of a possible impact of trauma-focused treatment on the reliability of memories may become relevant in any subsequent criminal proceedings. Against this backdrop, a research group of the psychotherapeutic and trauma outpatient clinic of the LMU (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München; Wolkenstein 2024) conducted several studies to determine whether the trauma-focused procedures of imagery rescripting, imaginary exposure, and eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing affect trauma-related memories. They came to the surprising conclusion that this is not the case and that the risk of false memories is actually reduced by such treatments. This article shows on the other hand that this conclusion is untenable, that the available evidence does not support it, and why its uncritical dissemination is dangerous.
