In an attempt to establish an understanding of the causes leading to homicide against women, one must first consider the quantitative extent to which the phenomenon occurs in different social structures and cultures. Afterwards, an anthropological notion of violence will be outlined regarding the question why humans, men and women, exert violence and kill in the first place. To recognize the specific characteristics in the murder of intimate partners that were committed not with respect to adversaries or monetary value but only to kill the single most important intimate partner, the fundamental meaning of “relationship” and the concept of “being with self in the other” is discussed.
