The article deals with the differences but also similarities between forensic psychiatric assessment and therapy. It points out that medical ethical maxims are valid in both areas of work. Psychotherapeutic expertise and a therapeutic attitude are of great importance for the expert examination and the validity of the findings obtained. In addition, the perception of the assessment by the person being assessed influences the attitude towards therapy. Therefore, a transparent and psychoeducative approach is recommended.
