First record of Cryphalus morivorus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) in Hungary following its recent detection in Europe
摘要
The bark beetle Cryphalus morivorus, native to East Asia, was first recorded in Europe in 2022 in Slovakia. In 2025, adults were collected from thin branches of white mulberry (Morus alba) at several sites in Budapest, Hungary, from trees exhibiting dieback of terminal shoots and characteristic entrance holes. Species identity was confirmed by morphological examination and analyses of nuclear 28S rDNA and mitochondrial COI sequences, which placed the Hungarian specimens within the C. morivorus clade together with previously published European and Asian reference sequences. The Budapest localities are situated approximately 100 km south of the nearest confirmed Slovak locality and lie at slightly lower elevations than those previously reported in Slovakia. This record represents the first occurrence of C. morivorus in Hungary and the second confirmed occurrence in Europe, underscoring the importance of continued monitoring of mulberry plantings in Central Europe.
