From Tepuis to the Atlantic: A new Spiritiops Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1998 (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) species emerges in Southeastern Brazil
摘要
Spiritiops Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1998 is a genus of Baetidae endemic to South America with only two described species: Spiritiops silvudus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1998, from northern Brazil and Venezuela, and Spiritiops tepuiensis Nieto & Derka, 2012, originally known only from Venezuelan tepuis, but now recorded for the first time in Brazil (Roraima state). Recently, among material collected in the Brazilian states of Espírito Santo and Bahia, a new species, Spiritiops atlanticus sp. n. was found and is herein described based on nymphs. This species can be distinguished from the other species of the genus by the following characteristics: 1) labrum dorsally with a pair of submedial long setae; 2) maxillary palp longer than galea-lacinia; 3) gills with inner and outer margins broadly pigmented; 4) abdominal color pattern uniformly brown with a sublateral cream-colored line on terga I-IX; 5) paraproct with 15–17 spines. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed a previously undocumented seta on the tarsal claw, providing new morphological data that may offer valuable insights into ongoing discussions about the composition and monophyly of the Baetodes complex. A 658 bp fragment of COI was amplified, and pairwise nucleotide differences among species of the genus confirmed the distinctiveness of the new species.
