Investigating the prevalence of O104 serogroup and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing Escherichia coli isolates from goat carcasses in Kerman, Southeast Iran

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is generally considered harmless; however, it is responsible for several illnesses in both human and veterinary medicine. Furthermore, the increasing antimicrobial resistance among E. coli strains has made such infections a significant threat to global health. The current study aims to evaluate the prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli (ESBL-EC) and the O104 serogroup among samples obtained from goats slaughtered in Kerman, southeast Iran. In this cross-sectional study, 300 samples were collected from goat carcasses between October 2022 and December 2023. All samples were subjected to isolation and identification of E. coli. The E. coli isolates were then tested for antimicrobial susceptibility, ESBL production, the presence of resistance genes, and their belonging to the O104 serogroup. In total, 190 E. coli isolates were obtained, with the prevalence of ESBL-EC and multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains being 26/190 (13.6%) and 100/190 (52.6%), respectively. The highest resistance was observed against florfenicol (100/190, 52.6%), while the lowest resistance was recorded against enrofloxacin (12/190, 6.3%). Conversely, the highest sensitivity was noted for trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (159/190, 83.6%). The most frequently observed resistance genes included blaTEM (17/190, 8.9%), blaCTX-M (15/190, 7.8%), and dfhrV (11/190, 5.7%). Additionally, 21/190 E. coli isolates belonged to the O104 serogroup. In conclusion, the prevalence of O104 serogroup E. coli among goat carcasses highlights the need to identify additional serogroups and serotypes of E. coli isolated from slaughtered animals in Iran. Furthermore, the emergence of ESBL-EC and MDR isolates emphasizes the need for antimicrobial stewardship aimed at reducing or preventing the development of MDR as much as possible.
