<p>Utilizing local seed sources is often recommended in restoration due to their adaptability to environmental conditions. However, at spatial scales, the degree of interpopulation variability in terms of germination and seedling performance is usually not included in comparisons, especially in the Arabian desert. Therefore, in this study, we examined the effect of seed source on germination and seedling growth of <i>Panicum turgidum</i> and <i>Pennisetum divisum</i> (<i>Poaceae</i>) to identify the best seed sources that are superior in terms of important characteristics (i.e., germination, seedling survival, and growth performance). These characteristics have advantage for restoration/rehabilitation as well as for mass production of the species. This study found that both species require after-ripening to overcome seed dormancy. However, <i>P. turgidum</i> exhibited deeper dormancy, with lower germination rates and delayed germination. A maternal effect influenced germination behavior in both species, as the seed source affected germination and emergence performance. In contrast, seed source had minimal impact on seedling growth and water content.</p>
