Report of insect-pathogenic fungi from Zhejiang Province, Southeast China

Entomopathogenic fungi are key components of ecosystems and contribute to the regulation of insect populations. However, the distribution and diversity of these species remain poorly studied in certain regions, including Southeast China. This study presents the first documented occurrences of entomopathogenic fungi in Zhejiang Province, reporting their presence at five locations during the rainy summer season of 2016. Field surveys focused on arthropod cadavers infected by the fungi collected from both vegetation and forest floor substrates. Identification of species from the orders Entomophthorales, Hypocreales, and Neozygitales was conducted. Among them, Neozygites linanensis, Zoophthora radicans, Pandora dipterigena, Tarichium tipulae (recently reclassified as Zoophthora), Batkoa major, Beauveria bassiana, and Lecanicillium lecanii were documented. The findings highlight epizootic events caused by N. linanensis in bamboo aphids and Z. radicans in corn aphids, underscoring their ecological roles in natural pest regulation. These preliminary records contribute to expanding knowledge on fungal diversity within Chinese ecosystems and reinforce the importance of ongoing monitoring of fungal-insect interactions in both forested and agricultural landscapes.
