Environmental drivers of backswimmer diversity and distribution in Northeastern Algeria’s freshwater systems (Heteroptera: Nepomorpha)

Predators play a pivotal role in shaping food web structures, and backswimmers (Notonectidae), active predators of aquatic invertebrates, serve as a key component of freshwater trophic systems. This study examines the diversity and distribution of backswimmers across four regions of northeastern Algeria, highlighting their importance as indicators of ecological integrity and habitat diversity. Five species were identified during the field surveys:: Notonecta glauca, N. maculata, N. meridionalis, N. viridis, and Anisops sardeus. The distribution patterns of these species were mapped, and multivariate analyses revealed that environmental factors, including longitude, altitude, water depth, substrate type, and, to a lesser extent, the presence of helophytes, significantly influenced these patterns. Furthermore, the life history traits and conservation status of backswimmers and their habitats were discussed, with particular attention to the impacts of global and regional environmental changes on freshwater biodiversity. This study underscores the ecological significance of backswimmers and their potential role in monitoring the health of freshwater ecosystems.
