Discovery of a new opportunistic Medetera species (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) in Dutch greenhouses with a great potential as biological control agent of thrips and other greenhouse pest species
摘要
In 2020–2023, an unknown long-legged fly species (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) was collected in large numbers at three different pot plant nurseries in The Netherlands. A comparative study revealed that this woodpecker fly was new to science. A description of Medetera zeurnietensis sp. n. is given in this paper with notes on its identification, distribution and ecology. Thus far, this species seems to be restricted in its distribution to pot plant nurseries in the province of Zuid-Holland, The Netherlands, and has not been observed in other Dutch nurseries. Behavioural observations suggest that this species has a great potential as biological control agent for thrips and other greenhouse pests.
