Applying project scheduling approaches to optimize aircraft maintenance activities
摘要
We address the optimization problem of sequencing aeronautical maintenance activities, motivated by the decisions faced by a medium-sized Brazilian aeronautical maintenance center that is responsible for a fleet of dozens of aircraft. The proposed approaches accurately represent the problem and are based on integer linear programming and constraint programming. From a project scheduling perspective, they can be categorized as resource-constrained project scheduling problems, which has been previously explored in the literature in other contexts. The objective of this study is to enhance the sequencing of aircraft maintenance activities by reducing the completion time of all the activities (makespan) or the average lead time of the aircraft. Computational experiments, performed on realistic instances based on empirical corporate data, demonstrate that the proposed optimization frameworks consistently yield solutions that significantly reduce specialized labor requirements.
