Clinical observation of electroacupuncture at Baliao points combined with intermittent catheterization on urination and quality of life in patients with lower motor neurogenic urinary retention

To investigate the effects of electroacupuncture at Baliao points combined with intermittent catheterization on voiding function and quality of life in patients with lower motor neurogenic urinary retention (LMNUR).
MethodsNinety patients with LMNUR were randomly assigned, using a random number table, into an observation group and a control group, with 45 cases in each group. Both groups received intermittent catheterization, while the observation group additionally underwent electroacupuncture at Baliao points. At the end of the treatment course, the recovery time of spontaneous urination was compared between the two groups. Bladder residual urine volume, spontaneous urination volume, bladder function score, short-form health survey-Qualiveen (SF-Qualiveen) score, and positive rate of urinary leukocytes were compared before treatment, after 8 weeks of treatment, and at the 24th week after treatment. The incidence of adverse events during treatment was also compared.
ResultsThe recovery time of spontaneous urination in the observation group came significantly earlier than that in the control group (P<0.05). In both groups, bladder residual urine volume and positive rate of urinary leukocytes decreased over time, while spontaneous urination volume increased over time (P<0.05). After 8 weeks of treatment, the observation group showed a significantly smaller bladder residual urine volume and a lower positive rate of urinary leukocytes, bladder function score, and SF-Qualiveen score, as well as a significantly larger spontaneous urination volume, compared to the control group (P<0.05). At the 24th week after treatment, bladder residual urine volume in the observation group remained significantly smaller than that in the control group (P<0.05).
ConclusionElectroacupuncture at Baliao points combined with intermittent catheterization can effectively improve voiding dysfunction in LMNUR patients, enhance self-care ability, and has high safety.
