Exploring 25 years of telesurgery research: comparative retrieval strategies and citation analysis of the top 100 most influential papers

This study presents a first comprehensive bibliometric analysis of telesurgery research published between January 2001 and October 2025, using the Scopus database. The analysis aimed to map the intellectual, institutional, and geographical development of telesurgery, while identifying influential authors, institutions, funding agencies, and thematic clusters shaping this evolving field. Three distinct search strategies were employed to assess retrieval breadth and specificity: (1) the Title–Abstract–Keyword (TAK) search, (2) the Abstract-only search, and (3) the Title-only search. The TAK search retrieved 1,910 records, while the Abstract-only and Title-only searches yielded 1,318 and 337 publications, respectively, demonstrating that search-field scope materially alters dataset coverage and bibliometric density. The annual publication output increased consistently from 2001 to 2025, rising from 26 to 39 (TAK) and 16–27 (Abstract) to a peak of 199–163 (TAK) and 146–116 (Abstract) by 2024–2025. Author productivity analysis identified 11 prolific researchers with ≥ 15 publications under the TAK strategy, led by Marescaux J. (21), Zhang X. (19), and Ebihara Y. (17). Institutional mapping revealed that the Ministry of Education of China (35), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (29), and Kyushu University (25) were top contributors. At the country level, the United States (558) and China (396) dominated, followed by the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Canada, and Germany. Funding analysis confirmed the National Natural Science Foundation of China (176 projects) as the leading sponsor, while the International Journal of Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery was the most frequent publication source, contributing 58 papers under the TAK search. The top 100 most cited papers (2001–2024) were published across 74 journals, comprising 75 original articles and 25 reviews, with an average of 162.1 citations per paper and a mean document age of 12.1 years. N gram (uni, bi and tri gram) analysis were performed to present main focus of the top 50 most cited papers. Overall, the findings highlight how search-field scope profoundly affects retrieval volume, author visibility, and institutional representation. The study provides a structured overview of telesurgery’s global research dynamics and citation performance, serving as a quantitative foundation for future qualitative or systematic investigations in this emerging domain.
