Intelligent packaging, an innovative solution for food industries: a comprehensive review
摘要
Intelligent packaging (IP) is an example of innovative packaging employed in the food industry, which has attracted significant attention over recent years. This packaging system, while meeting the goals of conventional packaging, protection, containment, communication, and convenience, provides consumers with information regarding the food, such as freshness, temperature exposure, leakage or breakage of the package, and pathogenic contamination, by continuous monitoring of the product. This technology, while improving the supply chain, reduces food waste and can prevent foodborne diseases by issuing alerts about product contamination to the consumer. The function of the IP system is based upon the use of three groups of technologies: indicators, sensors, and data carriers. Applying each of these technologies depends on the type of product. Like any other emerging technology, the IP system faces obstacles and limitations that challenge its use in the food industry on a large scale. The commercialization of the IP system depends on conducting further studies concerning the economic optimization of these technologies and increasing their safety and efficiency to overcome the existing obstacles. The present paper reviews the three classifications of the IP system integrated within the package and addresses the most recent innovations and developments in the IP industry with a comprehensive and detailed look.
