Valorization of pomegranate peel powder/extract for development of sweet potato starch based active packaging film and application for shelf life extension of bread

The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of incorporation of pomegranate peel powder (PPP), pomegranate peel extract (PPE) and combination (PPP/PPE) on physical and functional properties of sweet potato starch (SPS) based films. The finding of the study revealed that incorporating PPE and PPP produced a better film than native SPS film. The addition of 20% PPE in SPS-based film exhibited significantly (p < 0.05) higher antioxidant and antimicrobial activities but non-significant (p > 0.05) improvement in barrier and mechanical properties, as compared to SPS film. However, the addition of PPP and PPP/PPE into the SPS matrix significantly improved the tensile strength (1.236 MPa), elongation of break (20.52%), water vapour permeability (5.760 × 10−12 g.cm/cm2s.Pa) and oxygen permeability (0.54 × 10−18 m3. m/ m2.s KPa) of film. All PPP and PPE-based films enhanced the opacity, yellowness and greenness colour of the film. The film (F6- 6% PPP/20% PPE) showed excellent antioxidant activity (98.3%) and antimicrobial properties against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, and Rhizopus oryzae. Furthermore, the developed active film was used to wrap the bread samples and compared with LDPE for shelf life analysis. In observation, it was found that bread packaged with active film had a lower microbial count and weight loss during storage. The present study will help valorise pomegranate peel waste to develop active biopolymeric films that may reduce industrial wastage and address the negative impact of petroleum-based films.
