One of the most enduring legacies of Andalusian contributions to mental health was the establishment of mental health hospitals, known as “maristanes.” These institutions, distinguished by their compassionate and patient-centred care, profoundly influenced the development of Western medicine, and laid the groundwork for the emergence of psychology as a scientific discipline. This paper goes through the intellectual tapestry of Andalusia during the historical era of Islamic governance, commonly known as the Andalusian Renaissance.
