Multifaceted Corrosion Failure of Pump Casing Sidewall and Internal Vanes
摘要
A pump station experienced a premature failure in a horizontal split-case ductile cast iron pump housing that resulted in a hole in the casting sidewall as well as material loss on the internal vanes. A visual examination, ultrasonic thickness testing, and metallurgical analysis of the failed pump housing and sister pumps revealed a multifaceted corrosion mechanism that led to material loss and premature failure of the pump housing. This article demonstrates how operational history, extended exposure to corrosive environments, and material selection contributed to the catastrophic failure of the pump housing.
