<p>Present work involves failure analysis of input shaft that finds its application in commercial vehicle segment for heavy duty tandem application that failed during manufacturing stage at straightening operation. Detailed failure analysis involving visual inspection, fractography, microstructural analysis, hardness measurements, scanning electron microscopy, electron discharge spectroscopy was done to arrive at the root cause analysis. From the detailed analysis it is concluded that the input shaft failed due to incipient melting which happened during high temperature hot forging. It was recommended to optimize the forging temperature to avoid failures in future.</p>
