Failure Analysis and Performance Improvement of Conical Pick for Coal Mining Machines

Conical picks are crucial and easily-worn components of coal mining machines, which affect production efficiency and equipment safety. This research focuses on a conical pick which failed after merely 8 h of service, and includes microstructure, phase analysis, and mechanical properties testing. The conical pick had become stuck during operation, resulting in eccentric wear. Simultaneously, the insufficient heat dissipation and high temperature generating in intense friction of the conical pick head, leading high-temperature annealing of the pick head, which accelerates wear leading to the detachment of the hard alloy head. In order to solve the problem of detachment of brazed hard alloy heads and to improve wear resistance, we have developed a novel type of cast pick reinforced with tungsten carbide and titanium carbide, the service of which has been significantly increased in engineering tests.
