摘要

This paper reports details of a study carried out on a spring hanger that was used in the suspension system of a locomotive engine. Many spring hangers broke prematurely without warning in many occasions from the same location, where the shaft diameter is greatest. However, the component under investigation did not have any of the common factors that lead to failure. The comparatively smaller area of the instantaneous fracture zone suggests that the hanger was lightly loaded during operation. The analysis confirms a situation of fretting fatigue where a cyclic load is applied to the component in the axial direction with a contact pressure.
